Holy Gridiron! National Football League Talks Fail, Union Decides to Decertify. Fans Don't Know What That Means
This afternoon, Friday, with the collective bargaining agreement expiring at midnight, with no reported progress as how to split the billions, which fans, networks and advertisers spend on football, with the two parties reported to be far away from a compromise, and after sixteen sessions with federal mediator, talks between the owners of the NFL and the players union broke off. According to the New York Times, the union took steps to dissolve itself. This maneuver and the cessation of talks put next season, and I can't believe future seasons, of the nation's number one sports attraction in jeopardy.
The Times reports, that the player's union, the National Football League Players Association, for the second time in its 54-year existence, plans to decertify itself, renounce its status as the exclusive collective bargaining representative of the NFL players, and turn from negotiation to possible litigation. The Times reports that the players association is expected to seek an injunction to prevent the NFL owners from locking out players, and maybe file an antitrust lawsuits against owners. That would be really taking a pee in the bed. Big-name players may be the plaintiffs in possible the law suit.
I wonder if we are going to have no football, or scab football? It is probably still to early to tell, although talks have been broken off.
