One of the great things about the internet is that for a lowish price, you can watch any baseball game, anytime you want. This is, of course, awesome, when mlb.com can actually make it work, which seems to be less than half the time. That’s something for another time, I think. But, what happens when you have to leave the house? You can’t bring your computer into the car, or onto the bus. How do you get your baseball fix? Well, the good news is this; if you go to the podcasts section of the iTunes store and search for ‘baseball’, there are a lot of choices.
As with anything on the internet, a lot of choices means a lot of crap to wade through, but, being the selfless individual I am, I’ve listened to a few so that I can bring you a few recommendations. Obviously, there’s a number for every team, and there’s no way I’m going to listen to all of them, so feel free to suggest your own at the end. Without further ado, then…
Baseball America Podcast. A twice weekly podcast, this deals mostly with minor league prospects, the draft, and college baseball. It’s informative, interesting, and not nearly as dry as you might imagine it might be. Might not be to everyone’s taste, but certainly appeals to my inner geek.
Baseball Prospectus Podcast. The episode I listened to had an interview with Michael O'Keeffe, who’s written a new book about Roger Clemens and Steroids. The sound quality is pretty good, too, which is not necessarily a given, with these things. I’m going to subscribe from now on.
Athleticscast. Now, I’m an A’s fan, something for which I make no apologies. However, this isn’t very good. It only came out of one ear in my headphones, and though my iPod has been recently trying to convince me to give more money to Steve smug Jobs by doing its best eighties communist generic copy impression, I think this is definitely their fault. The content is also not that interesting. I mean, Vin Mazzaro shouldn’t be brought up yet!
Drunk Jays Fans. See, now this is one that shows that podcasts about individual teams can still be worthwhile, even if you don’t care about the team. Or the players. It’s smart, it’s funny, it’s inebriated, and it’s about the Blue Jays. It’s three people, whom you wish were the people you went to ball games with rather than your jerk friends, sitting around and talking about baseball. And swearing. They get some pretty good interviews, and play some decent music, too. Although they are Canadian, you should be able to make out most of what they say.
Baseball History Podcast. Sounds a little like the old guys who sit behind you at ballgames, who have probably seen every game since about 1612. This week’s podcast is about Virgil Trucks. I have no idea who this is, yet somehow for the ten minutes this lasts, I care. A can’t miss.
So, there are five for you to try. Tell us yours below!
